Are you really building business relationships using social media? Well they say there are 1.1 billion Facebook users, but can that really be true? How much time do we spend each day using social media? Is it too much time? In my opinion, maybe a little too much time is spent trying to build relationships strictly using social media. Don’t get me wrong, social media can be one of the most effective tools today for small businesses in promoting themselves and a necessary tool this day in age. But there has to more. We can’t forget about personal engagement with our customers. People like to talk to people still in person, not just through a computer.
Has the internet age taken away from personal engagement? We can’t allow this to happen to us. We still need to use the valuable tools social media offers us to reach new customers and build new business relationships, but we really need to know who our customers are. So the next time a customers comes into your business, be sure to ask them how they heard about you. If they say through Facebook, twitter or any other social media platform, then introduce yourself, shake their hand and thank them for stopping in. Make that Facebook follower a real customer. Engaging with them in person is what will help build a real relationship. Take this in-person time to get to know your customer and show them who you really are as a business person. Think of social media as the way to make that initial connection to your potential customer, but always remember the importance of in-person engagement. We don’t want to loose ourselves in the internet.
Make use of all the great tools social media has to offer a small business, but remember to get out there and be involved as well in the community, so people get to know you (not Facebook you). The combination of using the internet and in-person engagement will help you build strong lasting business relationships with your customers and community.
