Small Business Tips: Is your business listed?

Small Business Tips:  Is your business listed on all local searches?

Well we’ve learned about how to market your business through social media, email, networking and more.  So we know the importance of getting our business name out there. But have you spent the time to add your business information to local search engines?  Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yelp are just a few.

Without your business information listed properly on local searches, your business will not be found.  Yes this can be a daunting task as there is over 100 places you could list your business information.  But let’s start with the most important places for now.  We will go over Google, Bing, Yahoo. There are also companies that can help you get listed in all the search engines.  There usually is a fee, but it you don’t have the time to go to each one and add your listing this may be a good option for you.

Google

First you need to make sure you have a Google places account.  Go to this link to sign up your business listing. Next it will ask you to sign into your Google account.  Add listing will be your next page.  This is where you enter the information about your business so Google can search and find your business. Next Google will search their database and then pull up your business information.  Make sure the information is correct and choose that listing.  Next you will be asked to verify your listing. If your business is not listed there you will be promoted to have Google send you a postcard to verify you are authorized to manage this listing.  You will receive the postcard in the mail in 1 to 2 weeks with a PIN number on it.  Once you receive this you will need to go back into the account and enter the PIN received on your postcard. In the meantime you can add in some information about your business.  Email address, website, facebook, photos and description of your business. The more information you put in the better.  Once you have completed your business information you are finished with this part.  Don’t forget to go back into your account and enter the PIN  to verify your business information.  It could take up to a few weeks to cycle on Google.  Now you can go back anytime and update or add information.

Bing

Again you will need an account for Bing to list your business.  You will need to go to Bing Places for Business to get started. You will type your business info in for Bing to search.  If your business listing doesn’t come up you will need to Create New Business.  It will ask you to login to your Microsoft account. If you don’t have one you can sign up for one, or choose the option to sign in with a single-use code.  Now you will go in and enter all your business information.  Once you’ve completed this step you will be asked to verify your business.  Again you will be sent a postcard in the mail with a PIN. You will have to come back and enter the PIN to verify your business listing.  After verifying your business, you will then be able to add further information into your account. You’ve completed your listing with Bing.

Yahoo

To get started with a Yahoo listing you will need to go here. You will be asked if you want a basic listing or an enhanced listing, your choice.  For now we are going to do the basic listing to get you started.  Click on basic listing and it will prompt you to login to your Yahoo account.  Again you will enter all your business information in. Next is will ask you to claim a listing. If your business is listed there, than go ahead and claim it.  If not you will want to create a new listing. Here you will be able to add further information such as business hours, description and so on. You will be give the option to preview listing and make sure all information is correct.  Then you will need to verify by typing the code shown and agree to term services.  Then submit information. You will then receive a message saying your business information has been submitted and is pending verification by Yahoo Local. You will be asked to choose which method you want to receive your verification code. Once you receive that code enter that into the page to complete verification.  It takes about 20-25 business days for Yahoo to verify. You’ve now completed your Yahoo listing.

Now another good way to check and see where your business is listed, or not listed, you can use Getlisted.org.  Type in your business name and Zip Code, hit check my listings and you will get a list of where you are listed.  If you don’t see your business listed it will give you a list of search engines you need to consider adding your information to.  Check back here often after you’ve got your business listed to make sure the listing are pulling up.

We hope this helps get you started in the right direction with listing your business online.
