January: National Get Organized Month & More

january2014 has arrived a time for many of us to consider resolutions for the New Year.  While you are contemplating your resolutions for 2014, you should keep in mind these few important happenings in January.

January is National Get Organized Month. Take this opportunity to get your records in order, update your beneficiaries, clean out your files from 2013 and start fresh this New Year.

January is also National Radon Action Month. As a homeowner you’ll want to make sure your home is safe.

You can’t see radon, but it’s not hard to find out if you have a radon problem in your home. All you need to do is test for radon. Testing is easy and should only take a few minutes of your time.

The amount of radon in the air is measured in “picocuries per liter of air,” or “pCi/L.” There are many kinds of low-cost “do-it-yourself” radon test kits you can get through the mail and in some hardware stores and other retail outlets.

Some other note worthy observances in January include:

Martin Luther King Day

Cervical Health Awareness Month

National Birth Defects Prevention Month

National Glaucoma Awareness Month

National Mentoring Month

National Stalking Awareness Month

National Winter Sports Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month

Thyroid Awareness Month

On a lighter note these are some other silly and fun January observances:

Elvis Presley’s Birthday

Static Electricity Day

Milk Day

Winnie The Pooh Day

National Popcorn Day

Pie Day

Regardless of whether you have a resolution in place or not, take this time to start the New Year off with a clean slate. Make to 2014 the best it can be.

Here are a few inspirational quotes to get you motivated for 2014.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” — Albert Einstein

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.” — T.S. Eliot

Changes coming for 2014 you need to know

happy new yearThere are a few changes we have mentioned in the past, but feel they are worth repeating for the upcoming New Year.

Fines will increase for distracted driving:

There are also stiffer penalties when it comes to distracted driving. Anyone caught using a cellphone while driving will have to pay $150 for the first offense, $300 for the second and $500 after that.

Fines for not removing snow from your vehicle:

A new law now requires all cars, trucks and commercial vehicles to clear off snow and ice from their roof. Most of us have been behind the wheel when a large chunk of snow or ice flies off while driving on the state’s roads and highways, and now people who don’t remove it prior to that will face a fine of $120, and if anyone is hurt you’ll pay up to 10 times that amount.

Minimum wage:

The new year will also see a bump in the state minimum wage when it goes up to $8.70.

Registration of Assault Weapons:

If you haven’t registered yet, Tuesday is the last day and you have until 3 p.m. to do so. Residents can also mail in the forms by midnight.

We hope you all have a safe and wonderful New Year’s.  If you are heading out tonight to enjoy New Year’s with friends and relatives, be sure to be responsible and Don’t Drink and Drive.

Happy New Year’s
