Shop Small this Holiday Season

small business saturdayWe are one week away from the official start to the holiday shopping season, what is called Black Friday.  A day when may people wait in line for hours to get deals on their holiday presents.  But as a local small business, we like to think of November 30, as our official start to the holiday shopping season.  Small Business Saturday.  This was started by American Express several years ago to help boost exposure of the small businesses during the holiday season. A chance to give back to your local businesses.  The major difference in shopping small vs. large is that you will receive a different level of service, attention and enjoyment.  Small businesses take pride in the attention and service they give to their customers. Plus you won’t have to wait in long lines for hours to hopefully get that present, just to find out they are all gone.

Statics show that well over 50% of the money spent in your local independent business stays in your community.

  • For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 remains in the local economy, and $27 leaves.
  • For every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business, $43 remains in the local economy, and $57 leaves.
  • When you shop locally owned businesses, your money is recirculated over and over and creates up to 75% more tax revenue to your community and state.
  • For every two jobs national retailers bring to a community, three jobs are lost as a result of local businesses closing down.

So why not consider shopping small this year for your holiday presents.  Not only will you receive amazing service, find unique products, you will be supporting your local economy.  Let us know what local businesses you will be shopping this upcoming holiday season.

Shop Small on Small Business Saturday.  Your local businesses will thank you.

Small Business Saturday: Support Local Businesses

connecticut small business insuranceSmall Business Saturday is a nationally recognized day when consumers spend billions of dollars at independent neighborhood shops and restaurants. With anticipation of the upcoming holiday season and Small Business Saturday, here are some tips to help Main Street Business owners to get ready for the busy holiday season.

Supplies:  Be sure your business is supplied for the upcoming holiday rush.  If you use other vendors to supply your business, be sure to get your orders in early to make sure your shipments arrive in amble time for the holiday rush. Lack of product can hurt your business.

Marketing:  Large retailers are starting even earlier this year with their marketing of the holiday shopping season.  Small Businesses need to do the same.  Start marketing your promotions now and get the word out to your shoppers that you are ready for them. Pick a promotional item for your business that you can market.  Make use of social networking when marketing.  Your Facebook page is a great way to get the word out to your fans about your promotions.

Display:  One thing small businesses have over larger retailers is the unique style of each independent shop or restaurant.  Keep this in mind when you start decorating and displaying holiday items for the upcoming shopping season.  Pick a theme for your shop/restaurant.  Spend the time to make those shop windows stand out to your local shoppers and grab their attention.

Early Bird Specials: Offer a discount coupon or special sale to reward purchases made early in the season

Throw in Free Items:  Pick a few days throughout the month and throw in freebies to help promote your products

Free Shipping: Everyone loves free shipping this time of year.  If you have a few low-priced items offer a free coupon for shipping with a purchase of a certain amount.

Small Business Saturday, November 30th is sponsored by American Express.  Go to their website and sign your business up for promotional materials you can use online and in your store to help increase exposure of your business.
